Facebook photo leads to arrest in stolen laptop case

A San Pedro man was arrested after his Facebook photo allegedly appeared on a stolen laptop outfitted with tracking software, authorities said Tuesday evening.

Jose Miguel Ramirez, 22, used the laptop to log onto Facebook on Nov. 4, which enabled a monitoring company to gather his personal information and photo, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said. The information was passed on to authorities.

The laptop had been installed with "LoJack for Laptops" theft-recovery software, the department said in a statement.

Ramirez allegedly stole the computer from a Rancho Palos Verdes home where he had done work as an unlicensed contractor, the department said. He also allegedly stole a second laptop and a PlayStation 3.

Authorities said Ramirez installed a new operating system but failed to disable the tracking software. He was being held without bail because of a felony immigration hold by federal authorities, according to the Sheriff's Department.
